For the Love of a Pug (or, how i made it to the finals)

Hey there!

It's been awhile, so I decided to take some time to post one of my newer projects. Just for fun, I thought I'd show you the process.

This project was for an article on narrative tv shows which kill off characters for ratings (ala 24) to boost ratings. After a lot of brainstorming, I came to the idea of using the metaphor of the director as Ceasar at the Roman coliseum. Here's the rough sketch for that

After this John Hendrix suggested I lose the fat guy. I did. He was replaced with a lovable little pug.

We were fortuate enough to get to meet Yuko Shimizu during this crit. She suggested I lose the cameras and pug entirely. This made me sad. But she was right. In memorial here is the pug in all his glory.

This is the final image, color corrected to help the eyes. It was quite a process, but overall I was very happy with how it went. Special thanks to my teachers on this one!

Drawing Giants

Just finished up a really long haul over the past two weeks, and getting ready to dive into the semester full time. I'm getting very excited. It's fun to get down to some serious drawing, and preparing for the future. 

I'll have much more to post soon, but here is Andre to wet your pallets. Done on Vellum, which made the pencil work much more efficient and fun.

Seminar Progress

The Seminar project has proceeded according to schedule so far, with a few hitches in the road, but some fun accidents along the way. I've included some of the color studies I've been working on in this post. 

Crowd Control

After a blistering amount of concepting I came to the point where I could execute this editorial portrait of Paul Giamatti. 

Fixing the crowd behind Giamatti was its own interesting challenge, as I a utilized reverse color scheme for it.

The Seminar Commences!

Hey everyone-

We have started the process of research and work for our seminars, and as such I have been doing alot of on site drawing lately at museums in St. Louis.

Here is an example:

As you can see, I have a thing for drawing giant buffalos. This is from the small western expansion museum underneath the St. Louis Arch. 

I haven't done straight to pencil work in awhile. It was fun, but even more fun was the digital coloring. I stumbled upon this palette and I kinda like it.

Just got back from New York and have started in on the New Semester! I'm a bit behind on posting work, but while I'm catching up I decided to put up a sketch page from one of my jaunts to the St. Louis Art Museum. Hope this extra tidbit helps make up of for the winter slowdown- see you all soon!

Illustration Finals

Here is a sampling of some of the work I produced for our final project in Sketchbook and Narrative. The project was based around crafting images for a folktale we wrote ourselves. Mine involved Louisiana and magic, naturally.

Now for Something a little more Graphic...

Here is an example of work I produced for my graphic stories class.  The idea behind the work was to produce a personal narrative wherein we described ourselves using a graphic metaphor, ala the film about Bob Dylan I'm Not There.  It was a fun assignment, and I chose to use an example of my life campaigning for John Kerry when I was a youngn'. 

Most of all though, it was fun to draw the astronaut suit and try out a retro-spreadsheet layout for the color design and story layout.
