The Big Bang Theory at Gallery Nucleus!

I'm excited to announce that I was invited to participate in a show at the renowned Gallery Nucleus highlighting The Big Bang Theory! I got to show my caricature chops, and got to do fan art! You can find out all about the show here.

I highly recommend anyone in the area to check it out! There are 50 artists showing, and it's a great theme! See if you can find all the stories and in-jokes in mine.

Doctors make Bad Spies: Illustration for Scientific American

Illustration I produced earlier this year for Scientific American. The article was an editorial against using doctors as pseudo-spies in the war on terror. Thanks to art directors Micheal Mrak and Ann Chin!

Recent Work for the RFT

I've had the pleasure of working with Tom Carlson over at the River Front Times on some recent illustrations for their paper. I think St. Louis has one of the best Alt-weeklies around, so getting to illustrate some quirky stories for them is a dream come true.

The first is an illustration for an article on "dining tours" in the city- a fad which is taking the nation by storm.

The second was for a non-scientific study on what kind of music kids today like. PSY won hands down, apparently.

New Illo: Humpty Dumpty

Happy to present this new illustration in my fairy tale/ nursery rhyme series. My personal favorite growing up, Humpty Dumpty! As always, I tried to put my own spin on it. This time that involved researching costumes and architecture. At any rate, I hope you like it!

Dolphin Assassins!

It's been a busy month! Perhaps you have been following the news recently and heard about these fascinating dolphin assassins that had escaped containment in the former USSR. Sadly, the story turned out to be fake, but I still decided to produce a personal illustration based on it.

Alligator for Lent

Did you know you can eat Alligator as a meat substitute during Lent? Neither did I, but once I heard about it on the radio I decided to do this illustration.

Old Man Washburn Strikes Again

And now, a post inspired by my colleagues at the Summer Studio and the fine folks at Drawn! This is Sam Washburn at age 100. As you can see I finally get an epic beard, but no mustache. I also lack hair on the top of my head. Male pattern baldness. Just waiting for it to hit me. And of course, I'm still drawing animals in suits. Very important to my life of course.

The medium here is very mixed. I used oil, pen and ink, acrylic, etc. Wanted a chance to experiment. Think it worked out well.

The Seminar Commences!

Hey everyone-

We have started the process of research and work for our seminars, and as such I have been doing alot of on site drawing lately at museums in St. Louis.

Here is an example:

As you can see, I have a thing for drawing giant buffalos. This is from the small western expansion museum underneath the St. Louis Arch. 

I haven't done straight to pencil work in awhile. It was fun, but even more fun was the digital coloring. I stumbled upon this palette and I kinda like it.

The Great Debate

Washington University in St. Louis will be hosting the upcoming VP debates this week, and in celebration and recognition I decided to once again paint the cover for the Political Review. I have used this as an opportunity to work on my visual metaphors and my finishing skills. The metaphor here refers to the two as prophets for McCain and Obama. I had much fun looking up Rubens paintings and sketching at SLAM for inspiration. With any luck, somebody might notice the cover and pick it up!
